A Heart Wrenching Experience Part 2

I spent Sunday afternoon looking for "Vickie". I never found her. I went again today on my lunch hour - no luck :-( I am not giving up, tho. I will keep going back until I see her again.

In the meantime, I did a lot of research on the "homeless" and found a lot of good information. The best information I found came from a person who was once homeless themselves.

I tried to put myself in her place and made a list of all the things that I thought I would need if I were to suddenly be cast on the streets. I got it all together and put it in a suitcase on wheels with a handle. Here are some of the things that I came up with so far and I am carrying the suitcase in my car until I find her.

Bible
blanket
pillow
3 XL tee shirts
2 pairs of socks
toothbrush/toothpaste/mouthwash/dental floss
comb
breath mints/sugar free gum
shampoo/conditioner (2 in 1)
antibacterial soap/hand sanitizer
perfume
towel/washcloth
baby wipes
chapstick
Q Tips
Emery board, nail clippers, nail polish, hand lotion
calming body lotion
notebook/pen
snacks-breakfast bars, crackers, bottled water, tea bags, instant coffee, soups, peppermints, packaged tuna, cookies.
feminine products, toilet paper
scriptures
scarf
flashlight/batteries
Roll of Quarters
Roll of dimes

My next plan is to put together 6 backpacks to keep in the car with as many toiletry items I can along with a bible - 3 for men and 3 for women - to hand out when I see the need. I think in place of snacks - $5 giftcards to a few fastfood places like McD's, Sonic, etc.

I know this is a VERY small gesture - and not anything that can "fix" anyone - but I don't want to be oblivious to the people who are in need right under my nose. The song Jesus In Disguise has not left my brain in 3 days now. . Such a powerful message.

  1. You have really touched my heart with this story. I know our city has homeless but you don't normally see them as they normally go to the bigger city with the shelters. But this is a great idea.

  2. These are all great ideas! You might even consider getting a group of women from your church and getting together a few of these packs to give out. Maybe even a monthly thing. Every little bit helps!
