Mango - The Superfruit

I have REALLY gotten into Mangos lately. They are so good and I have been eating one every morning for breakfast. Not only are they good - they are good for you. Like really really good for you. There  are some reports that they can even help with weight loss - but I have yet to see that.

I have been buying them by the dozens every week and cutting them up, freezing them in snack size baggies and putting the little baggies into a gallon freezer bag. I can just take out a couple of days worth at a time and have them ready to go. I have no idea how high in price they will go in the winter months so I want to have a stockpile in the freezer. Right now they are 68 cents each - but occasionally you can find them 50 cents this time of year. I won't buy them once they get over 80 cents and I have a feeling it won't be long now. By the way - you can keep them in the freezer for up to 6 months - although I doubt I ever have any make it that long!

Here are some great Mango stats:

One large mango without peel contains 1.06 grams of protein, 135 calories and 3.7 grams of dietary fiber.

It is full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidant and phytochemicals.

Vitamin A ,Vitamins C & E and Selenium.
B-complex (anti-stress) vitamins, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus,  Folic acid (folate), and zinc.

Mangoes are very low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium.  They also contain some protein and amino acids, about 2% of your daily recommended amount.

Health Benefits include:
*Protect cells from free radical damage.
 *Lower certain cancer risk.
 *Improve iron absorption.
 *Great for the eyes.
 *Helps fight off viral infections.
 *Relieves constipation.

The mango skin is full of antioxidants, such as carotenoids, beta-carotene, alpha-carotene and lutein but I am not much for the skin - so I toss it. I have never been a peeling eater of any fruit, really, but if you can eat them - more power to you! Just that much more superfruit to eat!

  5. I just love fresh mango - it is a bit fiddly getting the stone out though. Canned mango just isn't the same. Cheers

  7. I didn't know they could be frozen either; I have one for breakfast too, Florida has so much fresh fruit available, more than when I lived in California.

  9. I love the picture! I can't say that I have tried mangos, but I think I am going to do so. I also heard on the news how you can cut up watermelon, mangos, and add kales leave to make one of the most nutritious, low calorie smoothies ever. I want to try that also.
