My New DOLL HOUSE/Workshop

I know, it has been awhile! I don't even have an excuse for it - just life, I guess.

I am so excited to have my workshop finished. It is the cutest. We bought one of those little sheds from Lowe's  - this one is 12 x 8 x 8. Brad put in an air conditioner - it has great lighting - and it is just so much better than tying up a bedroom in the house. I was always worried about the vinyl baking and not enough ventilation - so now I can just sit my oven right outside the door on a little table as needed.

I need a little bench to sit out in front - I have since added a welcome mat and a bucket of flowers. I think a little window box of flowers would be cute, too.
The following pictures were taken before the ceiling was finished with sheetrock or curtain added.

My cute elephant print curtain I made.
We had it put together by Lowe's professionals but my husband did the sheetrock inside, cut out another window for AC and did all the painting. He is making me a sign with my nursery name to add to the outside.

I love it!

My Downs Syndrome Reborn

This has been like my dream reborn to create. I have wanted to do a Down Syndrome kit since I started reborning. It was a toss up between Pebbles and Vincent - I went with Pebbles. She is adorable.
I didn't know what kind of reactions I would get but once I posted her to my Facebook page (both personal and reborn) there has been nothing but positive. In fact, I believe I have had more comments with this one than any other so far. That makes me very happy I chose to make her.

I would really like to do another with blonde curls and I hope to someday,  just another reason to get my rooting skills down this summer. I think she still looks pretty cute with painted hair. As you can see she makes a sweet looking girl or boy.

My First Craft & Vendor Market

I finally got to participate in my first Craft & Vendor Market - I am so glad I did but I will not be doing so again until Fall or I find an indoor market. I am too much of a wimp and can't take the heat! My babies can't either. I worried the whole time if they were getting too hot and the eyelashes were getting a little limp on one of my babies. I don't worry with hand rooted eyelashes but the falsies are glued on so the glue can get a little sticky in the heat. It wasn't that it was really that bad hot, but the humidity was horrible.

Anyway - I went in knowing that I most likely would not make a sale -  most people do not expect to spend over $150 at a whack when going to those type of places BUT I did get plenty of exposure which was my intentions. I gave out plenty of business cards and several people asked to hold one of the babies. I answered a lot of questions and after all was said and done I only had 2 people say they were "creepy". Not bad! Not a single person walked by that didn't make a comment about how real they looked. I took 4 babies with me - Kameko, Grant, Kimberly & Amber. I think Kimberly got the most lovin' on but every one was impressed with Grant's size. I was able to explain some of the reasons people adopt reborn baby dolls such as for dementia therapy, grief therapy or they just want a baby doll to hold. There are dozens of reasons that people want them, but I was not really prepared for one man who kept coming to my booth and making comments about how creepy they look, how real they look, etc and he kept telling me he would love to have one. After the 3rd time it was obvious he wanted me to ask him why he wanted one if they looked so creepy and he couldn't wait to tell me. He said he would love to tie one in a carseat to his bumper and drive down the highway just to watch peoples reactions or leave it in the car and sit back and watch people try to "save the baby".  Weirdo!  He also asked if I would just sell a few body parts since he couldn't afford a "whole doll". Of course I said no!

I had a 10 x 10 spot down the middle of the pavilion so that was pretty good, I think.
I had 2 photo  albums full of babies that I have made and adopted out. I also took a couple of blank parts (head, limbs) to show how they look before I start painting and baking. I had a small bag of the fine glass beads and polyfil, as well.

It was a good day (other than the creepy weirdo) and I feel like I accomplished what I set out to and that was to make people aware of my Reborn art and hopefully they will remember me when they have a birthday or Christmas gift to purchase in the future!

Reborns for Assisted Living Therapy

I am working on several reborns that are going to be going to several different areas to be used in a program for Dementia patients as therapy dolls. My first baby (Blaze) went to New Jersey and they also chose Shyann and Olive - all 3 as boys. I am also working on my very first African American reborns and these will both be girls. They are from the Avery sculpt (which makes 5 Avery sculpts I have done). These four will be going to Florida and Virginia. Pretty exciting!

It is an Assisted Living facility that is already in 6 different states and they are adding more through out this year - so I know that I will have several more to do in a few months. I don't know the total as of yet - but I think I will be doing at least 2 - 3 at a time for them. I am very OK with that!

The director contacted me via e-mail over the Christmas holidays asking if she could talk to me over the phone - at first I thought it was a scam - but I looked up the facility, checked out their website and I soon realized this was on the up and up. I e-mailed her back and told her I would be happy to talk to her once the holidays were over. In the meantime she ordered one of my reborns to check out the quality and she liked what she saw.

Our first phone conversation went wonderfully, I liked her right away (her name is Rachel) and I believe she will be a lot of fun to work with. She told me a little about the facilities, how they would be using the reborns in therapy with dementia patients and I just love the fact that my reborns will be used in such a way to bring peace and joy to elderly folks.

I already had Shyann up for adoption, so she chose her and Olive was almost completed so she chose her, as well. At this writing they are packed and ready to go.

I started on the 2 AA reborns yesterday . I have to say they are much harder than I realized they would be. One is pretty dark and the other is a lighter shade but both are really bi-racial. I am glad they want to have some diversity for the homes.

Here are a few photos of the babes that will be traveling to the facilities soon. I think the patients will be happy with them.

All in one place

These are all the Reborn Baby Dolls I have made so far. The names under them are the names of the sculpt, not the names of the babies. When adopted, they go home with a blanket, several outfits, socks, magnetic paci, hair accessories for girls and a few surprises. Any doll can be made into boy or girl, they are not anatomically correct babies, they have doe suede bodies that are filled with fine glass beads and polyfil. The limbs are also filled with glass beads and polyfil and capped off before attaching to the body. I use Genesis paints and paint in layers and then the babies are baked numerous times to cure the paint. They have a magnet inside the head for a paci and I can put on in the top of the head for a magnetic barrette. Sleeping babies have rooted eyelashes and awake babies have eyelashes glued in. At this time I am only making/selling bald babies, at least until I perfect my rooting for hair. I am working on it!
Most of the clothing is brand new and some are gently worn - clean and in excellent condition. All babies will have at least one new outfit. I am very generous with the extras and like to wrap them individually so the box opening is a fun experience. Crochet baby blankets are handmade by me and my mother.
I absolutely love watching them come to life.

I will be adding to this blog post as I go...
